Sock Monkey Tutorial!!

I have ALWAYS wanted one of these.  Don’t ask me why.  My mom made me some fantastic dolls when I was growing up — I still have some of them (note to self — take pics and post for fun)…but there’s something about a sock monkey.

Link via Whipup.net  (I love this site.  I look at it EVERY day.)

See tutorial here.

For those of us who may need a little more support in directions.  (ahem.  not pointing any fingers…<grin&gt ;) Here’s a very detailed tutorial from another site.  I like the socks she used…

Buy the original Rockford red heel socks from here (I never knew what they were called or where to get them!).  They are on sale!

And, just because the search is cool.  Here’s a tutorial for a sock elephant.

I wonder what else you can make from these socks?  Hmmmm..

Here’s a couple of places that are making really unique sock monkeys — customized and funky!  And, to add icing to the cake — a few free patterns!

sockmonkeyfun is a totally cute site.  They have a free knitting pattern for a sock monkey scarf. And — make a matching knitted cap and scarf for your monkey.  Very cute!

In case you, like me, were also wondering “geez, I wonder how the whole sock monkey thing started?”  (see how I can take an idea and obsess about it?  Sometimes it’s annoying! <laughing&gt ;)

Here’s the history of the sock monkey.   Apparently, directions for the monkey and elephant are included with sock purchase?  Is that true?

There was apparently a sock monkey festival in 2005 at the museum below.  See images here.

Ahhh.  So, just in case you weren’t completely sick of this topic (I’m almost done, I swear!).  This museum in Illinois (did you know Midway was Rockford’s original name?) has a display of 6 foot fiberglass sock monkeys that have to be seen to be believed.  Hey!  I was born in Illinois — maybe that explains this…<laughing>

If you need to talk about sock monkeys — there is a place to go and do that.  The Red Heel Message Board is where to congregate.  (I am not making this up!)

And, to close this post appropriately — you can sleep in sock monkeys if you need to.

Okay.  Phew.  Now I’m completely done with my sock monkey obsession. Now you know what happens to me.  I see something I’m interested in and I have to go and find out about it.  A lot about it.  I wonder if Sock Monkeys is a topic on Jeopardy.  <laughing>

  1. Thanks for all those great sock monkey links! I have the PJs you pictured, then for Christmas my sister got me some cute fleece sock monkey PJ pants and sock monkey slippers! I don’t have a sock monkey anymore, but a lot of my baby photos feature one :-)

  2. I know — I don’t have one either…but I just can’t resist that tutorial! I’m jealous about the monkey PJs! That is soooo cool! I think we should all make a sock monkey just because!

  3. I live in Rockford and was at Midway to buy my friend a sock monkey and so I picked up a pack of socks to make one for myself. Yes, they do include the pattern for both and the sock packet has 2 pairs of socks so you can make two monkeys. I didn’t check your link but Midway also sells black socks with little sock monkeys on them. Of course I had to get my friend and myself a pair. The fiberglass monkey above is now located at Swedish American Hospital in their lobby. Thanks for reminding me that I really need to go make my monkey :D

  4. I think you should post a pic of your monkey when he gets done! I’ve gotta order me some socks…I’m glad to know they still include the directions. How cool is that? :)
